L’Arcadie, terre austère du centre du Péloponnèse, a connu une étonnante métamorphose dans l’esthétique occidentale : elle est devenue une utopie poétisée où des bergers se consolent, par le chant, des vicissitudes du monde. Après en avoir longtemps attribué l’invention aux Bucoliques de Virgile, les chercheurs les plus récents adoptent une position hypercritique en la lui déniant. Ils estiment que cette Arcadie est ou bien l’oeuvre d’épigrammatistes et de bucoliques grecs, ou bien le fruit d’un anachronisme avec la Renaissance italienne. Cet ouvrage mène une enquête globale qui manquait sur la question, en analysant l’ensemble des recueils virgiliens. À l’aide de concepts précis, tels l’arcadisme latin, le chant panodique, ou l’arcadicité écopoétique, il vise à démontrer l’originalité créatrice de l’Arcadie virgilienne qui s’impose du début à la fin comme une noétique de la paix introuvable.
Arcadia, an austere land in the center of the Peloponnese, has undergone an astonishing metamorphosis in Western aesthetics : it has become a poetic utopia where shepherds console themselves, through song, for the vicissitudes of the world. After having long attributed its invention to the Bucolics of Virgil, the most recent researchers adopt a hypercritical position by denying it. They believe that this Arcadia is either the work of epigrammatists and Greek bucolic people, or the fruit of an anachronism with the Italian Renaissance. This book conducts a global investigation that was missing on the question, by analyzing all the Virgilian collections. Using specific concepts, such as Latin arcadism, panodic chant, or ecopoetic arcadicity, it aims to demonstrate the creative originality of Virgilian Arcadia which imposes itself from beginning to end as a noetics of unfindable peace.
