C’est dans le sillage d’Apollinaire que Pierre Albert-Birot (1876-1967), pionnier de la poésie visuelle en France, découvrit l’idéogramme, synonyme pour lui de " calligramme ". Le mot le séduisit, et il écrivit à son tour des " poèmes idéographiques ", avant d’y renoncer, assez rapidement. L’idéogramme fut cependant chez lui plus qu’un simple engouement passager. Car s’il abandonna le mot, il ne rejeta pas les principes sur lesquels repose le signe idéographique lui-même. L’article tente d’examiner les formes et les enjeux de l’idéogramme dans l’œuvre de ce poète qui, indifférent à l’écriture chinoise, sut retrouver sous d’autres noms, et à l’intérieur du système alphabétique, les principes d’une écriture visuelle proprement idéographique.
A pioneer of French visual poetry, Pierre Albert-Birot (1876-1967) discovered the word "ideogram", which was a synonym for "calligramme" to him, through his relations with Apollinaire. He liked the term and wrote himself "ideogrammatic poems" for a short period. The ideogram was not mere fancy to him. Even though he abandoned the word itself, he did not throw away the principles of the ideogram. The paper discusses the forms and the meanings of the ideogram in the works of this poet who was not interested in the Chinese writing as such, but found an original way, under other names and inside the alphabetic system, to come back to the very principles of the ideogram as a form of visual writing.
