Si la guerre peut être une activité lucrative et si les possibilités de vivre des armes sont nombreuses au Tchad, seul un petit groupe d’hommes en armes ayant accès à l’État connaît des ascensions sociales fulgurantes. En analysant des itinéraires de (non)-accumulation d’ex-combattants, cet article montre que le monde des armes n’est ni un espace anarchique ni une voie d’ascension sociale ouverte à tous.

The limits of accumulation by violent means. Pathways of ex-combatants in ChadWhile war may be a lucrative activity and while opportunities to live from the gun are numerous in Chad, only a small group of men in arms who have access to the state achieve astonishing upward social mobility. An analysis of ex-combatants’ pathways of (non-)accumulation shows that the social milieu of men in arms is neither anarchical nor accessible and profitable for all those who are seeking opportunities for social advancement.
